We’re proud to announce the archery range at Spring Creek Park has a new name in honor of longtime Precinct 4 Parks employee William “Pepper Bill” Schiel!
“Bill has always led by example and played a central role in serving the Precinct 4 community,” said Commissioner R. Jack Cagle. “We all appreciate the vegetables, especially the fresh peppers, Bill provides us. We chose to name the range after him because of his dedication to Precinct 4’s parks and his skill in archery. After he tried bow hunting in 1998, he never used a rifle to hunt again. He’s truly a unique person that I’ve been honored to work with the past few years.”
Schiel joined Precinct 4 in 1989 as a caretaker at Spring Creek Park before becoming the first park manager at Burroughs and eventually working his way up to trades supervisor. In his time as a Precinct 4 employee, Schiel served under three different commissioners and has worked at Mercer, Meyer, Burroughs, and Spring Creek parks.
Bill plans to spend his retirement hunting, gardening, and spending time with his family. Located at Spring Creek Park’s east end, the quarter-acre archery range opened earlier in April and features 10 lanes reaching from 10 to 50 yards for archers of all skill levels. The range also includes a berm, shed, and nearby parking area for visitors.
The range is located in Spring Creek Park at 15012 Brown Road in Tomball. For more information about Spring Creek Park, visit www.hcp4.net/Community/Parks/SpringCreek.
